MVNU's Falkenberg Sweeps Weekly Hoops

MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Ben Falkenberg, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference, the National
Christian College Athletic Association, and
the NAIA Division II National Player of the
Week for his performance during the week of
December 25-31.Falkenberg, a 5-foot-10
sophomore guard from Wadsworth, Ohio,
averaged 38.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.5
assists, and 1.5 steals as MVNU posted a 2-0
record for the week with a pair of wins at
the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix,
Arizona. The former Wadsworth High School
star shot 63.4 percent from the field
(26-for-41), 57.1 percent from three-point
range (12-for-21), and nailed all 12 of his
free throw attempts during the week.
In the Cougars’ 77-71 victory over NAIA
Division I Biola (Calif.) University,
Falkenberg tossed in a career-high 39 points
to go with four rebounds as he led MVNU back
from a 10-point first-half deficit. Then, in
a 121-83 win over NCAA Division III Hanover
(Ind.) College, he scored 37 points with
four assists as the Cougars rallied from an
11-point first-half deficit. The 76 combined
points in consecutive games set a new school
record and it also gave Falkenberg 113
points in three straight games - another
school record.
On the season, Falkenberg leads MVNU and
ranks third among all NAIA Division II
players in scoring at 25.2 points per game.
He is shooting 53.4 percent from the field
(132-for-247), 47.7 percent from three-point
range (62-for-130), and ranks second in NAIA
Division II in free throw percentage at 92.9
percent (52-for-56). He also leads all NAIA
Division II players by averaging 4.1
three-pointers made per game.
The Cougars, who have won five straight
games, are currently 12-3 overall and ranked
16th in the latest NAIA Division II poll.
MVNU is tied with three other teams for
first place in the AMC South Division with a
4-1 mark and will host one of those teams,
Shawnee State University, on Saturday at
7:30 p.m. Falkenberg enters that contest
needing just 33 points to become only the
fourth sophomore in school history to reach
the 1,000-point mark in what would be only
his 52nd career game. |  |
