Week Again
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - For the third time this
season, Mount Vernon Nazarene University
men’s basketball player Ben Falkenberg has
been selected as the American Mideast
Conference Player of the Week as he was
honored for his performance in games played
January 29-February 4.Falkenberg, a
5-foot-10 sophomore guard from Wadsworth,
Ohio, averaged 29.5 points, 2.0 rebounds,
and 1.5 assists as the Cougars went 2-0
during the week with a pair of conference
victories. In a 91-82 win at Malone College,
the former Wadsworth High School star tossed
in a game-high 26 points and nailed six
three-pointers. Then, in a 94-80 victory
over the University of Rio Grande,
Falkenberg again led all scorers by pouring
in 33 points with five more three-pointers.
For the week, he went 17-for-44 from the
field (38.6 percent), 11-for-24 from
three-point range (45.8 percent), and
14-for-15 at the free throw line (93.3
percent).
On the season, Falkenberg ranks third
among NAIA Division II players with a 25.1
points per game scoring average. He leads
the nation in three-pointers made per game
(3.9) and he ranks second in free throw
percentage (89.5 percent). He has also
recorded 67 assists, 24 steals and 35
rebounds, and he has gone 97-for-207 from
three-point range (46.9 percent).
Falkenberg currently needs just 12 more
points to match the MVNU record for most
points scored by a player in his first two
seasons. Former Cougar great Ron Holmes
holds the record as he scored 1,229 points
in his first two seasons at MVNU.
The Cougars, who remained 12th in the
latest NAIA Division II poll released on
Wednesday afternoon, are currently 21-4
overall and in sole possession of first
place in the AMC South Division with a 13-2
conference mark. MVNU will return to action
on Saturday with an important conference
game at Shawnee State University that will
tip off at 3:00 p.m. With a victory, the
Cougars would set a new school record for
most conference wins as they have already
tied the current record which had been
accomplished twice before. | |
