MVNU's Falkenberg Named to Academic
All-America Team
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - Ben Falkenberg, a member of
the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team, has been selected to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America®
Second Team by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Falkenberg, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard from
Wadsworth, Ohio, leads the Cougars and ranks
third in NAIA Division II in scoring at 24.4
points per game. The former Wadsworth High
School star also leads NAIA Division II in
three-pointers made (3.9 per game) and ranks
second in free throw percentage (89.8
percent). Falkenberg is shooting 48.2
percent from the field (246-for-510) and
44.4 percent from three-point range
(116-for-261). He has also compiled 81
assists, 42 rebounds, and 29 steals, and he
needs just nine more points to tie the
single-season school record for points as he
currently has 731.
In the classroom, Falkenberg has a 3.84
grade point average as a Biology major. Of
the 15 student-athletes who were named to
the three College Division teams, he is the
only sophomore selected and he is also one
of only three NAIA players to be chosen as
the College Division is made up of NCAA
Division II and III and NAIA players.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-America® College Division Teams are
selected by CoSIDA members. Eligible
student-athletes are nominated by their
school’s sports information director and
must have at least a 3.20 grade point
average and be at least in their sophomore
year. Each of the eight CoSIDA districts
selects an Academic All-District First Team,
which is then forwarded on for consideration
at the national level.
Falkenberg becomes the fourth MVNU
basketball player to be named to a CoSIDA
Academic All-America Team. Former Cougar
standouts Tom Clark (Second Team in both
1986 and 1987), Doug Speelman (Third Team in
1996), and Alan Bock (Third Team in both
2005 and 2006).
MVNU is currently 24-6 overall and ranked
10th in the final NAIA Division II poll. The
Cougars have received an at-large berth into
the NAIA Division II national tournament
that will take place in Point Lookout,
Missouri, on March 7-13. The bracket for the
32-team tournament will be released on
Wednesday afternoon by 6:00 p.m. EST. | |
