Two Cougars Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team were recently named to the ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District IV College Division Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) when the teams were announced on Thursday.
 
Ben Falkenberg Mark Hess

Ben Falkenberg, a sophomore guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, was the lone sophomore and top player chosen to the All-District IV First Team. The former Wadsworth High School star ranks third in NAIA Division II in scoring (25.1 points per game) and leads the nation in three-pointers made per game (3.9). He also shots 89.5 percent at the free throw line (111-for-124) and has recorded 67 assists and 24 steals. Falkenberg is a Biology major with a 3.849 grade point average.

Mark Hess, a senior post from Ashland, Ohio, was named to the All-District IV Second Team after being an All-District IV First Team selection each of the past two seasons. The former Ashland High School standout is averaging 11.6 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field (96-for-168). He has also registered 42 assists and 11 steals. Hess is an Integrated Math Education major with a 3.656 grade point average.

The Academic All-District IV College Division Teams are selected by CoSIDA members. Eligible student-athletes are nominated by their school’s sports information director and must have at least a 3.20 grade point average and be at least in their sophomore year. The District IV College Division consists of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.

MVNU is currently 21-4 overall and in first place in the American Mideast Conference South Division with a 13-2 conference mark. The Cougars, who are ranked 12th in the latest NAIA Division II poll, will travel to Shawnee State University for a 3:00 p.m. AMC South Division game on Saturday.
