MVNU Players Earn AMC and Region IX
Baseball Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Brandon Turner and Mike
Laughlin, two members of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, have been
recognized for their performances during the
week of March 26-April 1 as the duo swept
the American Mideast Conference and NAIA
Region IX Player and Pitcher of the Week
awards respectively.

Turner, a junior outfielder/left-handed
pitcher from Lucasville, Ohio, posted a .500
batting average (7-for-14) for the week with
one double, two walks, one run scored, and
four RBI. He had three hits in a win over
Capital University and then added two hits
in each game of a doubleheader sweep of
Tiffin University. He also went 2-0 on the
mound with a 1.38 earned run average with
six strikeouts and two walks. The former
Valley High School star had his best game
against Tiffin when he threw a two-hit
shutout over seven innings in a 12-0
victory.
On the season, Turner is batting .296
with four doubles, one triple, 13 runs
scored, and 15 RBI. He is also 4-0 on the
mound with a 2.10 ERA and two shutouts as
opponents are hitting just .182 against him.
Laughlin, a senior right-handed pitcher
from Mogadore, Ohio, posted a 1-0 record in
two appearances during the week without
allowing a run. He tossed one scoreless
inning of relief against Ohio State
University-Newark with one strikeout. Then,
the former Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy
standout fired a two-hit shutout against
Tiffin University as MVNU posted a 1-0
victory. In that game, he walked five
batters and struck out a season-high 10.
On the season, Laughlin has posted a 1-2
record on the mound with a 1.67 ERA. In 27
innings of work, he has struck out 27
batters and issued 12 walks. Opponents are
hitting just .188 against him.
The Cougars are currently 18-8 overall
and 6-2 in the AMC South Division. MVNU,
which received votes in the latest NAIA
poll, will be back in action on Monday when
the team will travel to Ohio Dominican
University for an AMC South Division
doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
