NewsLady Cougars Earn NCCAA East Region Volleyball Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s volleyball team and their coach were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was Jenny Dunster, a senior middle hitter from Apple Creek, Ohio, who was selected as the NCCAA East Region Player of the Year. The former Central Christian High School standout has compiled 411 kills, 148 blocks, 31 aces, and 460 digs so far this season for MVNU. Dunster is also only the second Lady Cougar to record more than 1,200 kills, 1,200 digs, and 600 blocks in a career. Amanda Stevens, a senior outside hitter from Mount Vernon, Ohio, joined Dunster on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Centerburg High School product leads the Lady Cougars with 550 digs, and she has also recorded 445 kills and 47 aces. For her career, Stevens ranks fourth in school history in kills (1,813) and second in digs (2,339). Shena Beheler, a sophomore middle hitter from Butler, Ohio, was also named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Fredericktown High School star leads MVNU with 532 kills and 199 blocks this year to go with 316 digs and 30 aces. Earlier this year, Beheler became only the second player in school history to top the 1,000-kill mark in just two seasons, and she currently has 1,113 career kills. Katie Ickes, a junior outside hitter from Wooster, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former Smithville High School graduate has registered 328 kills, 56 blocks, and 73 digs this year. Head coach Paul Swanson was also selected as the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year for the thirteenth time in 22 seasons at MVNU. Swanson has guided the Lady Cougars to a 33-9 overall record and the NCCAA East Region title. The team has also earned its fifteenth straight trip to the NCCAA National Tournament that will be held November 3-5 at Northwestern (Minn.) College. MVNU will return to action on Saturday when the Lady Cougars will travel to Shawnee State University for an American Mideast Conference South Division match that will start at 1:00 p.m.
