MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Nick Schwartz, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, has been selected as the National
Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week for his
performance during games played April 24-30.Schwartz, a senior right-handed pitcher from Sunbury, Ohio, tossed a three-hit shutout as the Cougars clinched a berth in the American Mideast Conference playoffs with an 11-0 victory at the University of Rio Grande in the first of a four-game series. The former Big Walnut High School standout walked two batters and struck out five over six innings. On the season, Schwartz has compiled a 6-2 record with a team-best 2.69 ERA. In 60 1/3 innings of work, he has struck out 52 batters and issued just 14 walks. Opponents are hitting just .251 against him and he has thrown seven complete games in nine starts. MVNU is currently 22-19 as the team prepares to begin postseason play with an AMC Qualifier best-of-three series at Ohio Dominican University beginning on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The Cougars finished fourth in the AMC South Division with a 13-11 mark. |
