VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
basketball team has signed its first recruit for the 2006-2007
season with the addition of Julie Haumschild, who has decided to
further her education at MVNU and continue her basketball career
with the Lady Cougars.Haumschild, a 6-foot-1 post from Warsaw, Ohio, averaged 5.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game as a senior at Danville High School. She also shot 42.5 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from three-point range, and 65.3 percent from the free throw line. For her efforts, she was named to the District 11 and Mid-Buckeye Conference First Teams and the Mount Vernon News Third Team as a senior after earning District 11 and Mid-Buckeye Conference Second Team status as a junior. "We are very excited about the addition of Julie to our program,” said MVNU head coach Steve Gregory. "She is the type of kid that every coach dreams of adding to their team. She is very coachable, comes from a great program (Danville), and had a tremendous high school coach (Sue Davis). She can rebound, block shots, and score, and she is tremendously unselfish. She also has a great personality that people - especially her teammates - are drawn to.” "Julie is a 6-1 post player who can also play some on the perimeter,” Gregory added. "I like the versatility that she will add to our program. We are going to continue to work on her post moves and set-up to receive the ball which will be of paramount importance once she gets to the college level. She is definitely on the right track, and the coaching staff feels like she will be able to help us out right away with a good hard summer of work and preparation. Julie will be a great fit academically, athletically, and spiritually not only to our program, but to our entire campus community as well.” In addition to playing basketball, Haumschild has been active as the Student Council treasurer and Senior Class president in 2005-2006. She is a member of National Honor Society and is currently serving as the chapter president. She has also been active in Christian Youth United and has received the Principal’s Award three straight years. "There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Haumschild of her college choice. "I like the Christian atmosphere and the campus overall. It is the kind of campus that makes me feel at home, and it feels like it is the right place for me.” ![]() MVNU, an NAIA Division II school, finished the 2005-2006 season with a 15-14 overall record.
