Eight Cougars Earn NCCAA East
Region Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Eight members of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team were recently recognized when the
National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Team was
announced.

Highlighting the list was Nick Schwartz, a senior right-handed
pitcher from Sunbury, Ohio, was selected as the NCCAA East
Region Pitcher of the Year. The former Big Walnut High School
standout has compiled a 6-3 record on the mound this season and
leads MVNU in innings pitched (66 1/3), ERA (3.26), and
strikeouts (59).
Joining Schwartz on the NCCAA East Region Team was sophomore
third baseman Richey Burgos. The Ponce, Puerto Rico native and
former Puerto Rico Academy product leads the Cougars with a .410
batting average. Burgos has also recorded 11 doubles, seven home
runs, 34 runs scored, and 44 RBI. He has drawn 34 walks and
struck out just six times in 181 plate appearances.
Kyle Peters, a senior shortstop/pitcher from Mason, Ohio, was
also named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Mason High
School star is batting .354 with 10 doubles, one home run, 39
runs scored, and 24 RBI. On the mound, Peters has posted a 5-3
record with a 3.64 ERA and 42 strikeouts.
Eddie Smith, a junior outfielder from Johnstown, Ohio, rounds
out the MVNU selections to the NCCAA East Region Team. The
former Northridge High School graduate is batting .368 with 10
doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 33 runs scored, and
team-highs of seven stolen bases and 46 RBI.
Four other Cougars earned NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention.
Jake Poole, a senior relief pitcher from Wadsworth, Ohio, and
Wadsworth High School, has posted an 1-2 record on the mound
with a 6.23 ERA and a team-best five saves.
Ari Yoder, a junior first baseman from Sugarcreek, Ohio, was
also an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former
Garaway High School standout is batting .369 with three doubles,
one triple, 29 runs scored, 23 RBI, and four stolen bases.
Brandon Turner, a sophomore outfielder/pitcher from Lucasville,
Ohio, was another NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection
for MVNU. The former Valley High School product is batting .309
with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, 19 runs scored,
and 29 RBI. He has also posted a 1-0 record on the mound.
Josh Estep, a freshman infielder from Gahanna, Ohio, rounds out
the NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention list. The former Gahanna
Lincoln High School star has posted a .319 batting average with
11 doubles, five home runs, 39 runs scored, and 24 RBI.
The Cougars are currently 24-20 overall after upsetting
top-seeded Ohio Dominican University in the American Mideast
Conference Qualifier best-of-three series. MVNU will return to
action on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. when the Cougars will face host
Seton Hill (Pa.) University in the first round of the four-team
double elimination NAIA Region IX Tournament.
