Two Cougars Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -  Ryan Decker and Zack Helm, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, were recently honored for their achievements on the baseball field and in the classroom when the 2006 ESPN The Magazine© Academic All-District IV College Division Baseball Teams were selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Decker, a junior right-handed pitcher from Dover, Pennsylvania, was named to the Academic All-District IV Second Team as two pitchers were named to each of the two teams. This season, the former Dover High School standout posted a 2-3 record with a 7.74 ERA. In 43 innings of work, he struck out 36 batters. In the classroom, Decker has posted a 3.99 grade point average as a history and criminal justice double major.

Helm, a junior designated hitter from Centerville, Ohio, was also named to the Academic All-District IV Second Team as one designated hitter was selected to each of the two teams. The former Dayton Christian High School star compiled a .305 batting average with nine doubles, two triples, one home run, 31 RBI, and 37 runs scored as he played in 46 games with 44 starts. A communication studies major, Helm has registered a 3.94 grade point average in the classroom.

The Academic All-District IV College Teams consist of players from NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. Eligible student-athletes are nominated by their school’s sports information director and must have at least a 3.20 grade point average in their sophomore year.
