Four Cougars Honored by NCCAA East Region

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -  Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.

Mark Hess, a 6-foot-6 junior post from Ashland, Ohio, highlighted the list for the Cougars as he was named to the NCCAA East Region First Team for the second straight year. The former Ashland High School standout is averaging 14.9 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds while shooting 54.6 percent from the field (183-for-335).

Ben Falkenberg, a 5-foot-11 freshman guard from Wadsworth, Ohio, was selected to the NCCAA East Region Second Team. The former Wadsworth High School star leads MVNU in scoring at 16.4 points per game and has nailed a team-best 98 three-pointers despite starting just one game this season.

Andrew Thompson, a 6-foot senior guard from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former Mount Vernon High School product is averaging 11.8 points and has made 79 three-pointers.

Alan Bock, a 5-foot-6 senior point guard from Tallmadge, Ohio, joined Thompson as an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Tallmadge High School graduate is averaging 6.2 points and 2.7 rebounds and leads the team with 193 assists and 70 steals.

Head coach Scott Flemming was also selected as the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year. The Cougars are currently 25-8 overall and finished the regular season ranked 15th in the final NAIA Division II poll. MVNU posted a 13-5 AMC South Division mark to finish in second place, and the team went 9-0 during the second half of the conference schedule. The Cougars, who have now won 11 straight games, also won the AMC Tournament to earn an automatic berth in the NAIA Division II national tournament in Branson, Missouri. MVNU is the 16th seed in the 32-team event and will face Iowa Wesleyan College (25-6) at 1:45 p.m. CST on Wednesday, March 8.
