Two Cougars Named NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -  Nick Schwartz and Eddie Smith, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, were selected as NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans when the teams were announced recently at the NAIA World Series.

Schwartz, a senior right-handed pitcher from Sunbury, Ohio, posted a 6-4 record on the mound with a 3.29 earned run average. The former Big Walnut High School star led the Cougars with 79 1/3 innings pitched and 75 strikeouts. He also threw two shutouts and seven complete games in 12 starts with a save in his one relief appearance.

Smith, a junior outfielder from Johnstown, Ohio, batted .351 in his first season after transferring in from Columbus State Community College. The former Northridge High School standout posted 10 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 38 runs scored and a team-high 50 RBI.

MVNU finished the season with a 27-22 overall record. The Cougars also advanced to the NAIA Region IX Tournament championship game for the seventh straight year.
