Gahanna Lincoln Softball Standout Signs to Play at MVNU
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team has added another important recruit to the team’s roster for the 2007 season with the addition of Caitlin Murphy.

Murphy, a catcher from Gahanna, Ohio, has decided to further her education and continue her softball career at MVNU. As a senior at Gahanna Lincoln High School, she posted a .316 batting average with five doubles, five triples, seven runs scored, and 16 RBI as she was named to the Ohio Capital Conference First Team and the All-District Second Team. A three-year varsity starter who helped to lead her team to back-to-back OCC titles in 2005 and 2006, she also set a school record with 27 career sacrifices.

"Caitlin will add tremendously to our catching staff,” said MVNU head coach Jeana Howald. "She is quick and has a strong, accurate arm. She will add to our speed on the bases and will make an immediate impact on our program. She is also versatile enough to play other positions if needed.”

"Caitlin comes from a very supportive family and will add not only to our softball program but also to our campus community in general,” Howald added. "We look forward to having her as a member of our team.”

In addition to playing softball at Gahanna Lincoln High School, Murphy was successful in the classroom as she was selected as a Scholar-Athlete in both her junior and senior years.

"There were several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Murphy of her college choice. "I chose to attend MVNU not only to advance my softball career, but to further my education in a Christian environment.”

MVNU is an NAIA school that competes in the American Mideast Conference South Division. The Lady Cougars posted a 16-23 overall record in 2006, and the program has an all-time mark of 503-336-2 in the 22 years of the program’s history.
