Lady Cougars Sign Mansfield Christian Basketball Player
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team has signed another important recruit for the 2006-2007 season with the addition of Katie Rider, who has decided to further her education at MVNU and continue her basketball career with the Lady Cougars.

Rider, a 5-foot-6 guard from Mansfield, Ohio, averaged 8.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while shooting 41.1 percent from the field as a senior at Mansfield Christian High School. She helped lead Mansfield Christian to an 18-6 record and the program’s first-ever trip to the district championship game as she was named to the All-District Honorable Mention list.

"Katie is an awesome person with very good basketball skills,” said MVNU head coach Steve Gregory. "We are excited about her decision to attend MVNU and play college basketball. She helped Mansfield Christian to one of the best seasons in school history last year. She excelled in her role on the team and the team reaped the rewards with a great season.”

"Katie is another player who brings versatility to the team as she played just about every position on her team last year,” Gregory added. "I am excited about the addition of Katie to our program. She will represent us well athletically, academically, and spiritually.”

In addition to playing basketball, Rider was a member of National Honor Society and received Scholar-Athlete awards as a junior and senior.

"MVNU is a great school,” said Rider. "I am excited to be playing college basketball, and I am excited for a Christ-centered atmosphere where I can further my education and play basketball. I cannot wait to see what new opportunities come along.”

MVNU, an NAIA Division II school, finished the 2005-2006 season with a 15-14 overall record. The Lady Cougars, who won the National Christian College Athletic Association national title in 2001, compete in the American Mideast Conference South Division.
