MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Andrew Thompson, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men’s basketball team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference Player of the Week for his performance
during the week of February 6-12.Thompson, a 6-foot senior guard from Mount Vernon, Ohio, averaged 20.0 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals for the week while shooting 60.9 percent from the field (14-for-23), 60.0 percent from three-point range (9-for-15), and 75.0 percent at the free throw line (3-for-4) as the Cougars went 2-0. In an 81-74 overtime victory at Tiffin University, the former Mount Vernon High School star tossed in 13 points and dished out three assists. Then, in a 72-62 win over Ohio Dominican University, Thompson scored a team-high 27 points and nailed six three-pointers to fuel the victory. On the season, Thompson is averaging 12.0 points to go with 68 assists and 19 steals. He is shooting 36.6 percent from three-point range (70-for-191) and 82.2 percent at the free throw line (37-of-45). For his career, Thompson ranks 22nd in school history with 1,182 points. He also ranks ninth with 232 career three-pointers made. MVNU is currently 21-8 overall and ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Division II poll. The Cougars, who have won seven straight games and are 12-5 in the AMC South Division, will close out the regular season with a conference home game on Saturday against Urbana University at 7:30 p.m. |
