Photo of Steve Mayes MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Steve Mayes, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team, has been selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week for his performance during the week of November 28-December 4.

Mayes, a 7-foot junior center from Edgewood, Kentucky, averaged 16.0 points, 12.7 rebounds, 5.7 blocks, and 1.0 assist for the week as the Cougars went 2-1 and won the Food for the Hungry Holiday Invitational title. The former Dixie Heights High School standout also shot 58.8 percent from the field (20-for-34), 50.0 percent from three-point range (1-for-2), and 77.8 percent from the free throw line (7-for-9).

Mayes began the week with a career-high 23 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocked shots in an 80-74 loss at Urbana University. Then, in the first round of the Food for the Hungry Holiday Invitational, he nearly posted what would have been only the second triple-double in school history with a team-high 16 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and eight blocked shots as MVNU defeated Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) 72-61. He added nine points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and a career-high two assists in just 13 minutes in the championship game as the Cougars cruised to an 89-47 victory over Concordia (Mich.) University. Mayes was named to the Food for the Hungry Holiday Invitational All-Tournament Team for his efforts.

On the season, Mayes is averaging 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds. He leads the team and ranks second among NAIA Division II players with 42 blocks or 3.8 per game. He is also shooting 66.7 percent from the field (52-of-78).

MVNU is currently 8-3 overall and moved into the NAIA Division II poll at 21st when the first regular season poll came out on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars will return to action on Saturday when the team travels to the University of Rio Grande for an 8:00 p.m. American Mideast Conference South Division game.
