MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Mark Hess, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men’s basketball team, has been selected as the
National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the week
for his performance in games played from December 12-18.Hess, a 6-foot-6 junior post from Ashland, Ohio, averaged 17.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks as the Cougars went 2-1 during the week. The former Ashland High School standout also shot 48.5 percent from the field (16-for-33) and 86.4 percent at the free throw line (19-for-22). Hess began the week with 14 points and seven rebounds in a 77-75 loss at Daemen (N.Y.) College, who received votes in the latest NAIA Division II poll. Then, he added 14 points and six rebounds in an 80-64 win at Florida College. He closed out the week with a game-high 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists in an 82-76 win at the University of Tampa (Fla.), an NCAA Division II school. On the season, Hess leads MVNU in scoring (16.5 points per game) and rebounding (8.1 rebounds per game). He is also shooting 56.4 percent from the field (79-for-140) and 77.6 percent from the free throw line (38-for-49). The Cougars, who are ranked 21st in the latest NAIA Division II national poll, are currently 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the American Mideast Conference South Division. MVNU will return to action on January 4 with an AMC South Division game at defending NAIA Division II national champion Walsh University, who is ranked ninth in the latest poll, at 8:00 p.m. |
