MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team has signed an important recruit to join the team for the 2007 season with the addition of Lauretta Wallace.
Wallace, a native of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, has been a four-year starter and three-year captain who has helped to lead Canon McMillan High School to a 34-7 record the past two years as the team won back-to-back section titles and advanced to the WPIAL AAAA semifinals in 2005. As a junior, Wallace, who has played first base, infield, and outfield, had a .406 on-base percentage and a .429 slugging percentage while committing just one error all season at first base. She was named to the Washington Observer Almanac Diamond Dozen All-Star Team and she was selected to the NFCA Pennsbury College Showcase as well as being named her team’s Defensive Player of the Year.
"Lauretta will be a good addition to our team and our school,” said MVNU head coach Jeana Howald. "She is a top-notch student-athlete and will fit in well on our team and on our campus. From a softball standpoint, she is a versatile player who could play several different positions for us. She will be a quality left-handed batter to add to our lineup. We are excited to see how she will be able to help us.”
In addition to playing on the Canon McMillan softball team, Wallace was a captain and three-year starter on the volleyball team where she earned All-Section First Team honors as a senior. Her softball traveling team, the Canonsburg Lady Knights, also made two trips to the World Series and one trip to the Super World Series. She has also taken two Project Serve mission trips to Mexico with Youth for Christ, and she was selected to Who’s Who.
"When looking for a college, I wanted to find a place that would challenge me spiritually, academically, and athletically,” said Wallace of her college choice. "I felt Mount Vernon would offer me all these things and more. The things that I saw here and the people I met here have assured me that my time here will be full of great experiences and memories.”
