MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Richey Burgos, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, has been selected as the American
Mideast Conference, NAIA Region IX, and National Christian College
Athletic Association Player of the Week for his performance in games
during the week of March 27-April 2.Burgos, a sophomore third baseman from Ponce, Puerto Rico, batted .769 during the Cougars’ 3-1 week while posting a 1.462 slugging percentage and an .800 on-base percentage. The former Puerto Rico Academy standout went 10-for-13 with three doubles, two home runs, five runs scored, and six RBI as MVNU took three of four games from Tiffin University in AMC South Division play. Burgos began the week by going 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, two RBI, and three runs scored in a 6-2 win at Tiffin in the first game of a doubleheader. Then, he went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in a 12-11 loss in the second game. In a doubleheader sweep of the Dragons at MVNU, Burgos went a combined 6-for-6 with two doubles, three RBI, and one run scored as the Cougars prevailed 7-6 and 9-4. On the season, Burgos is batting .414 with six doubles and a team-high four home runs. He has also scored 18 runs and registered a team-leading 22 RBI and a .671 slugging percentage through the team’s first 20 games. MVNU is currently 11-9 overall and 3-1 in the AMC South Division. The Cougars will return to action on Thursday when the team will host Ohio Dominican University in another conference doubleheader that will begin at 1:00 p.m. |
