NewsMVNU's Tomlinson Earns AMC Defender of the Week Honorwritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Samantha Tomlinson, a member of the Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team, was recently
chosen as the American Mideast Conference Defender of the Week for
her performance during the week of October 17-23.
Tomlinson, a freshman defender from Tipp City, Ohio, helped lead the Lady Cougars to a 2-0-0 record during the week as she anchored the MVNU defense that posted two shutouts as she played all 90 minutes in each contest. In a 3-0 victory over Ohio Dominican University, the former Tippecanoe High School star registered one non-goalie save by clearing a ball of the goal line to preserve the shutout. Then, in a 3-0 win at Saint Vincent (Pa.) College, Tomlinson assisted on the team’s first goal. For the season, Tomlinson has started in all 18 of the Lady Cougars’ matches and is second on the team with 1,494 minutes played. The MVNU defense has posted seven shutouts on the year, and Tomlinson has also contributed three assists to the Lady Cougars’ attack. MVNU finished the regular season with a 15-3-0 overall record and are ranked 25th in the most recent NAIA national poll. The Lady Cougars also won their second straight AMC South Division title with a perfect 7-0-0 record. MVNU will put its school-record 12-match winning streak on the line on Saturday when the Lady Cougars will host Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College at 2:00 p.m. in the first round of the AMC/NAIA Region IX Tournament. The winner of that match will advance to the NAIA Region IX Final Four on November 5-6.
