MVNU Men's Soccer Team Lands Five on NCCAA Region Team

 MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Five members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Team was announced.

Josh Van Pelt, a sophomore forward from Maryville, Tennessee, highlighted the list for the Cougars as he was the top forward selected to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former William Blount High School star led MVNU with 14 goals and seven assists as he finished the year with 35 points.

Jamie Hilen, a senior defender from West Chester, Ohio, joined Van Pelt on the NCCAA East Region Team. The former Lakota East High School standout started all 20 matches and led the Cougars in minutes played with 1,798. He also anchored the team’s back line that posted six shutouts.

Jordan Knight, a sophomore goalkeeper from Kentwood, Michigan, was the only goalkeeper named to the NCCAA East Region Team. The former East Kentwood High School star recorded six shutouts and posted a 1.41 goals against average this season.

Matt Wilging, a freshman defender from Mansfield, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former Mansfield Christian High School product started all 18 matches in which he played and was a key member of the MVNU back line.

Brian Souder, a senior midfielder from Mansfield, Ohio, was also an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Mansfield Christian High School standout registered five assists as he started 15 of the 16 matches in which he played.

The Cougars finished the season with a 9-8-3 overall record that included a 2-3-3 mark in the American Mideast Conference South Division.
