NewsFive Cougars Earn AMC South Division Soccer Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Five members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team were honored when the American Mideast Conference South Division awards were announced on Monday evening.
Jamie Hilen, a senior defender from West Chester, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division Second Team after starting all 20 matches for the Cougars and leading the team in minutes played with 1,798. The former Lakota East High School standout anchored the MVNU back line that posted six shutouts and allowed just 30 goals in 20 matches. Josh Van Pelt, a sophomore forward from Maryville, Tennessee, joined Hilen on the AMC South Division Second Team. The former William Blount High School star led the Cougars with 14 goals, seven assists, and 35 total points. Jordan Knight, a sophomore goalkeeper from Kentwood, Michigan, was an AMC South Division Honorable Mention selection. The former East Kentwood High School standout posted six shutouts in 19 matches with a 1.41 goals against average. Jeffery Hinds, a junior midfielder from Kingston, Jamaica, was another AMC South Division Honorable Mention pick. The former Kingston College High School product registered eight goals and six assists despite playing in just 13 matches. Matt Wilging, a freshman defender from Mansfield, Ohio, rounded out the AMC South Division Honorable Mention choices for MVNU. The former Mansfield Christian High School star started all 18 matches in which he played and was a stalwart defender on the back line for the Cougars. MVNU finished the season with a 9-8-3 overall record. The Cougars also posted a 2-3-3 mark in the AMC South Division.
