MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - For the second time this season, Mike
Laughlin, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University
baseball team, has been selected as the American Mideast
Conference and NAIA Region IX Pitcher of the Week as he was
honored this time for his performance during the week of May 2-8.
Laughlin, a sophomore right-hander from Mogadore, Ohio, posted a 1-0 record for the week with a 1.13 ERA as the Cougars went 2-1. The former Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy standout tossed one scoreless inning of relief in the team’s non-conference regular-season finale versus the College of Wooster, who was ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, and he allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Then, he tossed a three-hitter and gave up two walks and one run over seven innings with six strikeouts in a 14-1 victory over Seton Hill (Pa.) University in the AMC Tournament Best-of-Three series to clinch a berth in the NAIA Region IX Tournament for MVNU. On the season, Laughlin has posted a 5-2 record with a 1.50 ERA. In 48 innings of work, he has struck out 48 batters and allowed just 27 hits as opposing batters are hitting just .170 against him. He also has two shutouts and six complete games in eight starts. MVNU is currently 26-13 overall. The Cougars, who are seeded third, will begin play in the NAIA Region IX Tournament on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. when they take on second-seeded Walsh University at Ohio Dominican University. The winner of the four-team double elimination tournament will advance to the Super Regional next week.
