Ten Cougars Earn AMC South Division Baseball Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Ten members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team were honored recently when the American Mideast Conference South Division awards were announced.

Kyle Peters, a junior shortstop from Mason, Ohio, was selected as the extra infielder on the AMC South Division First Team after earning AMC South Division Second Team honors last season. The former Mason High School star batted .368 for the Cougars and recorded eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 22 RBI, and 46 runs scored. He also committed just 14 errors at shortstop in 180 fielding chances.

Mike Laughlin, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Mogadore, Ohio, was one of four pitchers selected to the AMC South Division First Team. The former Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy standout led MVNU with a 7-2 record, a 1.86 ERA, seven complete games, and two shutouts. In 63 innings of work, Laughlin struck out 61 batters while issuing just 26 walks. Opposing batters hit just .197 against him.

Ty Dendinger, Richey Burgos, Steve Edwards, Jon Barchus, Nick Schwartz, and Jake Poole were each named to the AMC South Division Second Team, while Nate Rutkowski and Zack Helm were AMC South Division Honorable Mention selections.

Dendinger, a senior first baseman from Greenwich, Ohio, batted .397 with 12 doubles, 27 runs scored, and 33 RBI. The former South Central High School standout committed just four errors in 312 fielding chances at first base.

Burgos, a freshman third baseman from Ponce, Puerto Rico, batted .378 and led the team with 13 doubles, 46 RBI, and 48 runs scored. The former Puerto Rico Academy product started 47 of the team’s 48 games and also registered two triples and four home runs.

Edwards, a senior outfielder from Grove City, Ohio, batted .389 with 12 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 28 RBI, and 38 runs scored. The former Grove City High School graduate also committed just two errors in 75 chances in the outfield.

Barchus, a senior right-handed pitcher from Crestline, Ohio, posted a 4-6 record on the mound with a 2.78 ERA. In 64 2/3 innings of work, the former Mansfield Christian High School star struck out 53 batters and issued just 18 walks.

Schwartz, a junior right-handed pitcher from Sunbury, Ohio, posted a 5-2 record on the mound with a 4.57 ERA. In 65 innings of work, the former Big Walnut High School standout struck out 64 batters and issued just 15 walks.

Poole, a sophomore left-handed relief pitcher from Wadsworth, Ohio, posted a 3-2 record on the mound with one save and a 5.09 ERA. In 23 innings of work, the former Wadsworth High School product struck out 18 batters and issued eight walks.

Rutkowski, a senior outfielder from Davidson, North Carolina, batted .297 with six doubles, 21 RBI, and 27 runs scored. The former Mt. Greylock Regional High School graduate also led the Cougars with 12 stolen bases.

Helm, a sophomore second baseman from Centerville, Ohio, batted .295 with five doubles, one triple, one home run, 21 RBI, and 20 runs scored. The former Dayton Christian High School standout committed just four errors in 142 fielding chances during the season.

MVNU finished the 2005 campaign with a 31-17 overall record. The Cougars finished as the NAIA Region IX Tournament runner-up and the AMC South Division runner-up, and the team finished fourth at the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament.
