Lady Cougars Add Cambridge Basketball Player to Roster
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team has added another recruit for the 2005-2006 season with the addition of Jessica Lynn, who has decided to further her education at MVNU and continue her basketball career with the Lady Cougars.

Lynn, a 5-foot-7 guard from Cambridge, Ohio, averaged 14.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 5.0 steals per game as a senior at Cambridge High School in 2003-2004. She also shot 59 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range, and 67 percent from the free throw line. For her efforts, she was named to the East Central Ohio League First Team and the All-District 12 First Team. She was also an All-Eastern District Honorable Mention pick and an All-Ohio Honorable Mention selection.

"I am very pleased that Jessica has decided to join us here at MVNU,” said MVNU head coach Steve Gregory. "She will be a very fine addition to our program and university. She elected to sit out last season and comes to MVNU with four years of eligibility. She was a standout in her senior season as she posted very good numbers and earned All-Ohio Honorable Mention honors. She is also an outstanding defensive player as her steal numbers indicate.”

"Jessica’s versatility was a major plus as we looked at her and tried to decide where she best fit in our program,” Gregory added. "She has played a lot of point and shooting guard in high school. We will look to utilize her in our shooting guard and off-guard positions. More importantly for me, I am always looking for a hard-nosed stopper defensively. I think that Jessica fits that bill and then some. She does not back down when she competes and is not afraid to mix it up when scrapping after a ball. She has a lot of great qualities and I am looking forward to seeing how she will help our team in the upcoming season.”

In addition to playing basketball at Cambridge, Lynn also earned All-Ohio status in track as a junior. She was involved in student council, yearbook, and prom committee, and she was on the honor roll all four years. She was also an Academic All-Ohio selection as a sophomore and junior.

"There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Lynn. "When I visited MVNU, I really liked being around Coach Gregory. He seems like a great coach and a great person. Another factor for me was the basketball team. I got to know the girls pretty well and I’m looking forward to playing with them. I also like the good Christian atmosphere and it just felt like a really good fit for me. I feel like I have a great opportunity awaiting me at MVNU. Coach Gregory gave me that opportunity and I’m thankful for it and want to make the most of it.”

MVNU, an NAIA Division II school, finished the 2004-2005 season with a 7-20 overall record. The Lady Cougars, who won the National Christian College Athletic Association national title in 2001, compete in the American Mideast Conference South Division.
