MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Mark Hess, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men’s basketball team, has been selected as
the American Mideast Conference and the National Christian College
Athletic Association Player of the Week for his performance in
games played during the week of January 2-8.
Hess, a 6-foot-6 sophomore post from Ashland, Ohio, averaged 22.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game during the Cougars’ 2-1 week. The former Ashland High School standout shot 56.0 percent from the field (28-for-50) and 75.0 percent from the free throw line (12-for-16), and he also added four assists, one blocked shot, and five steals. Hess began the week with 19 points and seven rebounds in a 66-64 loss to Walsh University, who was receiving votes in the NAIA Division II poll at the time. He added 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals in an 82-57 victory over Wilberforce University. Then, he closed out the week with a career-high 33 points and nine rebounds in a 76-75 upset win over then third-ranked Cedarville University. In that game, Hess was 13-for-19 from the field and hit two free throws with 28.8 seconds left to give MVNU the victory. On the season, Hess leads the Cougars in scoring (16.7 points per game) and rebounding (8.1 rebounds per game) while shooting a team-best 54.1 percent from the field (131-for-242) and 71.4 percent at the free throw line (55-for-77). He also has compiled 34 assists, 10 blocked shots, and 15 steals. MVNU is currently 14-5 overall and 4-3 in the AMC South Division. The Cougars will return to action on Saturday with a conference game at Shawnee State University at 3:00 p.m.
