NewsHilliard Darby Soccer Standout Commits to MVNUwritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s
soccer team has added a key recruit to its roster for the 2005
season with the addition of Kelly Sgambellone.
Sgambellone, a forward from Hilliard, Ohio, set school records for goals (13) and points (32) in a season as a senior at Hilliard Darby High School while also adding six assists in 17 matches. For her efforts, Sgambellone was named the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division Co-Player of the Year, and she was selected to the All-District Second Team as well as the Super 12 Team. In addition, she was chosen as her team’s Most Valuable Player. "I am really excited to have Kelly joining the Lady Cougars next year,” said MVNU head coach Jonathan Meade. "She has proven to be a solid player in the Columbus area, and I look forward to her helping us be a better team next year. She is a nice finesse player, who has good speed. Her attacking skills will add to our scoring punch either from the forward or outside midfield position.” "Kelly has a good perspective on things,” Meade added. "She wanted to play soccer, but it was more important to her to find a school that would meet her Christian faith ideals and expectations. I think MVNU will be a great place for her to grow spiritually, get a quality education, and give her the chance to excel in college soccer.” In addition to playing soccer, Sgambellone has been an honor roll student all four years at Hilliard Darby. She also received academic athlete awards in the 2002-2003 and 2004-2005 school years. "There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Sgambellone of her college choice. "I wanted to attend a Christian school. MVNU has a nice campus and great facilities. I also really like what Coach Meade is doing with the women’s soccer program.”
MVNU finished the 2004 season with a 19-5-0 overall record that included a runner-up finish at the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament. The Lady Cougars also went 7-0-0 in the American Mideast Conference South Division to capture their second straight conference title, and the team was ranked 23rd in the final NAIA national poll.
