NewsLady Cougars Sweep Weekly Softball Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Heather Clark and Stephanie Johnson, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team, were recently selected as the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively for their performances during the week of March 27-April 2.
Clark, a junior pitcher from Oxford, Ohio, tossed a pair of three-hit shutouts during the week as the Lady Cougars went 4-0. The former Talawanda High School standout blanked Notre Dame College 1-0 and allowed just three hits and two walks over seven innings with a season-high eight strikeouts. Then, she shut out Geneva (Pa.) College 3-0 by giving up just three hits and one walk over seven innings with seven strikeouts. She was also selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week for her efforts. On the season, Clark has posted a 2-5 record with a 1.01 earned run average. In 55 1/3 innings of work, she has allowed just eight earned runs with 40 strikeouts and 16 walks. Opponents are hitting just .230 against her. Johnson, a junior shortstop from Tallmadge, Ohio, posted a .625 batting average for the week as she went 5-for-8 with three RBI and four runs scored. She also reached base safely in each game. In a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame, the former Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy star went 1-for-3 with one runs scored and two walks. Then, in a sweep of Geneva, she went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, and one walk. On the season, Johnson is batting .365 with a team-high six doubles, two triples, 10 runs scored, and 11 RBI. She has a .558 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base percentage, and she has stolen two bases. MVNU is currently 6-11 overall and 0-2 in the AMC South Division. The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday with an AMC South Division doubleheader at Walsh University at 1:00 p.m.
