Lady Cougars Well Represented on NCCAA East Region Team

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Eight members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team were honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Team was announced on Thursday afternoon.

Laura Kot, Stephanie Johnson, Jackie Shively, Heather Clark, Shannon Rachel, Brittany Stroop, and Shara Dyer were each named to the 15-player NCCAA East Region Team, while Kristin Eyerman was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection.

Kot, a sophomore outfielder from Tallmadge, Ohio, leads the Lady Cougars with a .446 batting average. She is 45-for-101 at the plate this year, and she has four doubles, one triple, four RBI, 24 runs scored, and nine stolen bases. The former Tallmadge High School star also has seven outfield assists.

Johnson, a junior shortstop from Tallmadge, has posted a .430 batting average with nine doubles, eight triples, 24 RBI, and 23 runs scored. The former Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy standout has also stolen six bases and has a team-best .699 slugging percentage.

Shively, a senior outfielder from Englewood, Ohio, is batting .427 with one double, one RBI, and a team-high 25 runs scored and 15 sacrifice bunts. The former Northmont High School product has stolen a team-high 10 bases and has set a new school record with 41 career stolen bases.

Clark, a junior pitcher from Oxford, Ohio, has posted a 6-8 record on the mound with a 1.15 ERA and two shutouts. In 97 innings of work, the former Talawanda star has struck out 61 batters and is holding opponents to a .223 batting average.

Rachel, a senior third baseman/pitcher from Galion, Ohio, is batting .310 with 10 RBI and four runs scored. The former Colonel Crawford High School standout has also posted a 1-1 record on the mound with a 0.45 ERA.

Stroop, a senior designated player/catcher from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, is batting .283 with eight doubles and five runs scored. The former Pottsgrove High School product also leads the team with 26 RBI.

Dyer, a senior catcher from Bucyrus, Ohio, is batting .250 with two doubles, one triple, four runs scored, and 10 RBI. The Bucyrus High School graduate has thrown out five base runners trying to steal, and she has a .948 fielding percentage.

Eyerman, a freshman pitcher from Delaware, Ohio, has posted a 6-7 record on the mound with two shutouts and a 1.89 ERA. In 88 2/3 innings of work, the former Buckeye Valley High School star has struck out 58 batters and issued just 14 walks.

MVNU is currently 13-16 overall and 3-7 in the American Mideast Conference South Division. The Lady Cougars are slated to return to action on Saturday when the team will host Malone College in an AMC South Division doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
