MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Jon Barchus, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, was recently selected as the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Pitcher of the Week for his performance during the week of April 18-24.
Barchus, a senior right-hander from Crestline, Ohio, picked up the victory in the Cougars’ only game of the week as MVNU downed county rival Kenyon College 8-3. The former Mansfield Christian High School star allowed just five hits and two runs (only one earned) over six innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
On the season, Barchus has compiled a 4-4 record on the mound with a 3.00 ERA. In 48 innings of work, he has struck out 40 batters and issued 13 walks. He has won his last three decisions, and he has moved into a tie for twelfth place on the Cougars’ career victories list with 19.
MVNU, which has won 12 straight games and 16 of its last 17 contests, will close out the regular season on Tuesday when the Cougars host the College of Wooster, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, in a non-conference nine-inning game that is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
MVNU has also wrapped up a home playoff series in the AMC Tournament by finishing second in the AMC South Division with an 18-6 mark. The Cougars will host the third-place team from the AMC North Division in a best-of-three series beginning on Thursday at Cougar Field.
