MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - For the second straight week, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team have swept the American Mideast Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Kristen Votapek, a sophomore forward from Amelia, Ohio, was named the AMC Offensive Player of the Week and the NAIA Region IX Player of the Week for the second straight week. She was also selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week. The former Amelia High School star was named the Most Valuable Player of the Spahr and Glenn Cougar Classic as the Lady Cougars posted a pair of 1-0 victories to win the tournament title. Votapek scored the only goal in the championship match win over Siena Heights (Mich.) University. She leads the AMC with 10 goals and 22 total points.
Cheryl Balogh, a senior defender from Lima, Ohio, was named the AMC Defensive Player of the Week as MVNU posted two more shutouts and she was named to the Spahr and Glenn Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team. The former Elida High School standout anchors the Lady Cougars' defense that has yet to allow a goal in six matches this year.
MVNU is currently 6-0-0 overall on the season. The Lady Cougars, who received votes in this week's NAIA poll for the first time in the program's brief four-year history, will return to action on Wednesday when the team will host the College of Wooster (5-1-0) in a non-conference match at 5:00 p.m.
