MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Steven Lesmes, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men's soccer team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference and the National Christian College
Athletic Association Player of the Week for his performance during
the week of September 22-28.
Lesmes, a freshman forward from Fredonia, New York, led the Cougars to a pair of victories during the week as he scored three of the team's five goals. In a 3-1 win over Urbana University, the former Fredonia High School star scored one goal. Then, he closed out the week by scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory at home against Indiana Wesleyan University. For the season, Lesmes is tied for the team lead with seven goals. He also has one assist for 15 total points, which ranks second on the team. He ranks third in the AMC in goals per game (1.17) and fourth in points per game (2.50). "Steve is a proven high school scorer after recording more than 100 goals in his career," said MVNU head coach Paul Furey. "Now, he is proving himself on the collegiate level as well." MVNU is currently 7-2-0 overall on the season and 1-1-0 in AMC South Division play. The Cougars will return to action on Saturday when they will host Taylor (Ind.) University in a non-conference match at noon.
