NewsLady Cougars Sweep AMC South Division Soccer Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team was well represented when the American Mideast Conference South Division honors were announced recently.
Kristen Votapek was named the AMC South Division Player of the Year and Jonathan Meade was named the AMC South Division Coach of the Year while the Lady Cougars were also selected to receive the AMC South Division Fair Play Award. Votapek, a sophomore forward from Amelia, Ohio, was one of four MVNU players on the AMC South Division First Team. The former Amelia High School star has scored a school-record 28 goals so far this season and is second on the team with seven assists. Votapek, who was also an AMC South Division First Team pick last year, leads the AMC in goals per match (1.33) and ranks second in points per match (3.00). Votapek was joined on the AMC South Division First Team by Catherine Hess, Cheryl Balogh, and Lisa Hinman. Hess, a junior forward from Hillsboro, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division First Team after being an AMC South Division Honorable Mention selection a year ago. The former All-Ohioan at Hillsboro High School leads the Lady Cougars with a school-record 13 assists to go along with a career-high 16 goals. She ranks third in the AMC in assists per match (0.65) and fourth in points per match (2.25). Balogh, a senior defender from Lima, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division First Team for the second straight year after being an AMC Honorable Mention pick as a freshman and sophomore. The former All-Ohioan at Elida High School has anchored the MVNU defense that has posted a school-record 14 shutouts and allowed just 10 goals in 21 matches this year. She has also recorded one assist and leads the team in minutes played at 1,873. Hinman, a senior midfielder from Syracuse, Ohio, rounded out the Lady Cougars on the AMC South Division First Team. The former All-State player at Faith Heritage High School was also an AMC First Team pick as a freshman and an AMC Second Team pick as a sophomore. This season, Hinman has recorded five goals and six assists to rank third on the team in both categories. Krysti Wilson, a freshman goalkeeper from Sunbury, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division Second Team in her first collegiate season. The former Big Walnut High School standout has posted school records with 13 shutouts, 102 saves, and a 0.44 goals against average. She has started all 21 matches for MVNU this year. Leanna Goss, a sophomore defender from Westerville, Ohio, was an AMC South Division Honorable Mention selection. The former Westerville South High School star has helped anchor the Lady Cougars' record-setting defensive effort. She has also registered one assist.
