NewsMVNU Men's Soccer Players Earn AMC South Division Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Six members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team were honored when the American Mideast Conference South Division awards were announced recently.
Nate Sommers, a junior forward from Mount Gilead, Ohio, was named to the AMC South Division First Team after being an AMC South Division Second Team selection as a sophomore. The former All-Ohioan at Mansfield Christian High School led MVNU with 12 goals to go with four assists this year. Jordan Knight, a freshman goalkeeper from Kentwood, Michigan, was named to the AMC South Division Second Team. The former All-State player from East Kentwood High School was among the AMC leaders with a 1.27 goals against average. He allowed just 19 goals in 15 matches while posting three shutouts. Jeffery Hinds, a sophomore midfielder from Kingston, Jamaica, joined Knight on the AMC South Division Second Team after making the AMC South Division First Team as a freshman. The former standout at Kingston College High School recorded five goals and three assists for the Cougars this year. Jeremy Hilen, a senior defender from West Chester, Ohio, rounded out the MVNU players on the AMC South Division Second Team after being an AMC Honorable Mention pick as a sophomore. The former Lakota East High School product led the team with six assists while also anchoring the defense that allowed only 22 goals to equal the school record. Jamie Hilen, a junior defender from West Chester, Ohio, was selected as an AMC South Division Honorable Mention pick. The former Lakota East High School standout was another key member of the MVNU back line. Steven Lesmes, a freshman forward from Fredonia, New York, was also chosen as an AMC South Division Honorable Mention selection. The former All-State player from Fredonia High School was second on the team with 10 goals in his first collegiate season while also adding three assists. MVNU finished the 2003 campaign with a 13-5-1 overall record. The Cougars also tied for fourth place in the AMC South Division with a 4-3-1 record.
