MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Jason Irish, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, has been selected as the
American Mideast Conference Player of the Week for his performance
during the week of May 2-8.
Irish, a senior outfielder/pitcher/first baseman from Cortland, Ohio, posted a .545 batting average for the week (6-for-11) as the Cougars went 2-1. In a 4-2 non-conference loss at NCAA Division I Wright State University, the former Lakeview High School star went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored. He also pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Irish, who was named the AMC Player of the Week once earlier this season, went 3-for-7 with six RBI and four runs scored in MVNU’s AMC Tournament best-of-three series sweep of Walsh University. He pounded two home runs with five RBI and three runs scored in a 14-1 victory in the first game, and he added one hit, a sacrifice fly, one RBI, and one runs scored in a 9-2 win in the nightcap as the Cougars advanced to the NAIA Region IX Tournament. On the season, Irish is batting .376 (59-for-157) and is tied for the team lead in both home runs (7) and RBI (42). He leads the team with 14 doubles, and he has also scored 39 runs. On the mound, the right-hander has posted a 6-2 record with a 3.12 ERA. In 60 2/3 innings of work, Irish has struck out 52 batters and issued just 17 walks. MVNU, which is ranked 16th in the most recent NAIA national poll, will begin play at the NAIA Region IX Tournament on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. against the University of Rio Grande (36-22) at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The Cougars are currently 35-15 overall.
