Four Cougars Receive NCCAA East Region Awards

 MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Three members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team and their coach were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.

Andy Dunn, a 6-foot-1 senior guard from Hamilton, Ohio, highlighted the list as he was named to the NCCAA East Region First Team. The former Lakota West High School star leads the Cougars in scoring at 20.2 points per game. He also leads the nation with 132 three-pointers made, and he ranks among the national leaders in free throw percentage at 92.0 percent (103-of-112). In addition, Dunn has recorded 68 assists and 28 steals.

Matt Hilbert, a 6-foot-7 senior center from Plain City, Ohio, was selected to the NCCAA East Region Second Team. The former Jonathan Alder High School star has averaged 10.2 points and a team-leading 9.1 rebounds per game. Hilbert has also compiled 52 assists, 17 blocked shots, and 34 steals.

Mark Hess, a 6-foot-6 freshman post from Ashland, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Ashland High School standout has averaged 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting a team-best 54.6 percent from the field (159-for-291) in his first collegiate season. Hess has also contributed 43 assists, 17 blocked shots, and 21 steals.

MVNU head coach Scott Flemming was chosen as the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year by his peers as he has guided the Cougars to a 21-11 overall record and the top seed in the upcoming NCCAA East Region Tournament. MVNU will host either Nyack (N.Y.) College or Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College in the NCCAA East Region championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13. The winner of that game will receive an automatic berth in the NCCAA National Tournament in Frankfort, Kentucky on March 17-20.
