MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Andy Dunn, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University men's basketball team, has been selected as
the 2004 recipient of the Pete Maravich Award, which is presented
annually by the National Christian College Athletic Association.
Dunn, a 6-foot-1 senior guard from Hamilton, Ohio, will receive the award on Wednesday night at the NCCAA National Tournament Tip-off Banquet in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Maravich Award, which is named after college basketball's all-time scoring leader, is given each year to a senior player who is highly skilled, an outstanding student, and an exemplary leader and Christian witness. Dunn ranks among the national leaders in scoring at 20.2 points per game and in free throw accuracy at 92.4 percent (109-of-118). The former Lakota West High School star also leads the nation with 137 three-pointers and is just 12 treys shy of tying the MVNU single-season school record in that category. In the classroom, Dunn is also a standout with a 3.587 grade point average in Business Administration and Accounting. He was an NCCAA and NAIA Division II All-America Scholar-Athlete as a junior and is up for both awards again this season. He was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team earlier this year. In addition to being one of the team's captains this season, Dunn has also been very active in leadership roles on the MVNU campus. Last year, he served as the junior class president while also playing both basketball and baseball. This year, he is the vice president of finance for student government. In addition to being active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he also traveled with Athletes in Action to Fiji during the summer of 2002. "Andy represents what this award is all about," said MVNU head coach Scott Flemming. "He is a gifted basketball player, an outstanding student, a leader on our campus, and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. I am proud to have him on my team."
Dunn and the Cougars will take their 21-12 record into the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament beginning on Thursday. MVNU is the third seed in the eight-team event that will be held in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Cougars, who won the 2002 NCCAA national title, will face sixth-seeded Central Baptist (Ark.) College at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The semifinals will take place on Friday at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. with the national championship game to be played at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
