MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Jason Irish, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, was recently selected as the
American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Player of the Week
for his efforts during the week of March 14-20.
Irish, a senior outfielder/first baseman/pitcher from Cortland, Ohio, led the Cougars to a 3-2 record for the week as he batted .563 (9-for-16) with two doubles, two home runs, five runs scored, and eight RBI. The former Lakeview High School star began the week by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI in an 11-1 victory over New England (N.H.) College. He added two hits including a home run in a 7-2 loss to the University of Minnesota Duluth and recorded one of the team’s five hits in a 7-0 loss to nationally-ranked Warner Southern (Fla.) College. Then, he had a hit in a 5-1 win over Teikyo Post (Conn.) University, and he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run in a 10-5 win over Knox (Ill.) College. He also tossed a three-hitter and allowed just one run and one walk in the win over Teikyo Post while striking out three batters. On the season, Irish is batting .419 with a team-high eight doubles, one triple, two home runs, 12 runs scored, and a team-leading 21 RBI. He is also 2-1 on the mound with a 2.49 ERA. In 25 1/3 innings of work, he has struck out 19 batters and issued seven walks. MVNU is currently 12-8 overall. The Cougars are scheduled to play a nine-inning non-conference game at Wright State University on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
