MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Justin Clarey, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, has been selected as the
National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week
for his performance during the week of March 22-28.
Clarey, a senior catcher from Columbus, Ohio, batted .448 for the week as he went 13-for-29 at the plate as the Cougars posted a 6-4 record for the week at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The former Hilliard Darby High School standout also compiled three doubles, two triples, one stolen base, seven runs scored, and eight RBI. In a doubleheader sweep of Westminster (Mo.) College, Clarey went 5-for-5 with one double, two runs scored, and two RBI. He added a double and a triple as he went 2-for-6 as MVNU split a twinbill at NCAA Division II Florida Gulf Coast University. He added one hit in a doubleheader split with William Woods (Mo.) University and one hit as the Cougars dropped a pair of games to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), ranked 11th in NCAA Division III. He closed out the week with two hits and four RBI in a win over Calvin (Mich.) College and two hits and two RBI in a victory over Sewanee (Tenn.) University. On the season, Clarey is batting .404 (23-for-57) with seven doubles, a team-high two triples, two stolen bases, nine runs scored, and 13 RBI. He has also thrown out nine of the 16 baserunners who have tried to steal on him. MVNU is currently 12-8 overall. The Cougars are scheduled to open up American Mideast Conference South Division play with a doubleheader at Tiffin University on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
