MVNU Softball Team Signs South Central Shortstop
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s fastpitch softball team has added another player to its roster for the 2005 season as Rachel Hamman has signed a letter of intent to further her education and continue her softball career at MVNU.

Hamman, a shortstop from Greenwich, Ohio, was a two-time Firelands Conference Honorable Mention pick and a two-time Ashland Area All-Stars First Team selection at South Central High School. As a senior, she batted .339 with three doubles, five RBI, 18 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases in 19 games. Hamman also set school records in 2003 with 13 extra base hits and 34 runs scored.

"We are excited about the addition of Rachel to our team,” said MVNU head coach Jeana Howald. "She will come in and compete right away for the starting second base job and will be our back-up shortstop. She has good skills and will help our team.”

In addition to playing softball, Hamman was named to the Firelands Conference All-Academic Team and was a member of National Honor Society.

"There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Hamman of her college choice. "MVNU has one of the best teacher education programs. I also want to grow closer in my walk with God and have the same impact on people as my cousins who attended MVNU have had.”

MVNU posted a 23-17 overall record in 2004 and finished fourth in the American Mideast Conference South Division with an 8-6 mark. The Lady Cougars also won the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament and advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament, where they finished fifth out of 10-teams. In addition, the team qualified for the AMC Tournament for the second straight year.
