MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - For the second time this season, Mark Hess, a
member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball
team, has been selected as the National Christian College Athletic
Association Player of the Week.
Hess, a 6-foot-6 freshman post from Ashland, Ohio, was honored for his performances during the week of January 19-25 as the former Ashland High School standout led the Cougars to a 2-0 record for the week. Hess averaged 19.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game while shooting 66.7 percent from the field (16-for-24) and making all six of his free throws. In a 65-56 victory over Tiffin University, Hess helped MVNU rally from a nine-point halftime deficit as he finished with a team-high 22 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the field to go with 10 rebounds. Then, in a 57-45 win over Walsh University, he added another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. On the season, Hess is averaging 13.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game to rank second on the team in both categories. He leads the team and ranks sixth in the American Mideast Conference by shooting 57.6 percent from the field (117-of-203), and he ranks tenth in the AMC in rebounding. Hess is also tied for the team lead with 14 blocked shots. MVNU is currently 15-7 overall and third in the AMC South Division with a 7-3 mark. The Cougars will return to action on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when MVNU will host AMC South-leading Cedarville University.
