MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Justin Clarey, a member of the Mount Vernon
Nazarene University baseball team, was recently selected as the
American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Player of the Week
for his performance during the week of April 11-17.
Clarey, a senior catcher from Columbus, Ohio, batted .611 (11-for-18) as the Cougars went 5-1 for the week. The former All-Ohioan at Hilliard Darby High School recorded at least one hit in each game and added one double, two home runs, three runs scored, and seven RBI. Clarey had three two-hit games and one three-hit game during the week, and his best game was a 3-for-4 performance in a 14-8 victory over Cedarville University when he drove in four runs. On the season, Clarey leads the team with a .472 batting average (51-for-108), two triples, and four home runs. He also ranks second on the squad with 10 doubles and 28 RBI, and he currently has a 13-game hitting streak. Clarey has also thrown out 15 of the 27 runners who have tried to steal on him. He recently moved into fourth place on both MVNU’s career home run list with 27 and on the career RBI list with 152. He also ranks seventh in career hits (220) and seventh in career doubles (27). The Cougars, who are 26-11 overall and ranked 19th in the latest NAIA national poll, are scheduled to return to action on Friday at 1:00 p.m. when MVNU will host Shawnee State University in the first of two AMC South Division doubleheaders that are slated for this weekend. MVNU is currently in first place in the AMC South Division with a 14-2 mark, while the Bears are 13-18 overall and 7-9 in the AMC South Division.
