MVNU Teammates Sweep Weekly Baseball Awards

 MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Dan Matheney and Nick Schwartz, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, were selected as the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for their performances during the week of April 18-25 as the Cougars went 5-2 and clinched at least a share of the AMC South Division title.

Matheney, a senior infielder from New Concord, Ohio, batted .538 for the week (14-for-26) as he recorded four three-hit games and one two-hit game. The former John Glenn High School star scored seven runs and drove in one run out of the lead-off spot while posting a .586 on-base percentage. Matheney also stole one base and handled 36 fielding chances without committing an error.

On the season, Matheney is batting a career-best .444 with a team-high 59 hits. He has also recorded seven doubles, 22 RBI, and 24 runs scored to go with three stolen bases. He recently moved into tenth place on MVNU’s career runs scored list with 129, and he ranks fifth in career assists with 376.

Schwartz, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Sunbury, Ohio, posted a 2-0 record for the week with a 0.64 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in 14 innings with no walks. In a 6-0 victory over Urbana University, the former Big Walnut High School standout tossed his first career shutout as he allowed just five hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts. He closed out the week by allowing just five hits and one run over seven innings in an 8-1 win over Shawnee State University as he struck out seven batters.

On the season, Schwartz, who was also named the NCCAA National Player of the Week, has posted a 5-4 record with a team-best 2.33 ERA. In 58 innings of work, he has struck out 66 batters and issued just 15 walks. In his four losses, the Cougars have scored a combined one run as MVNU was shut out three times.

The Cougars are currently 29-12 overall and ranked 20th in the latest NAIA national poll. MVNU will return to action on Thursday when the team will host Malone College in a non-conference doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
