NewsTwo Lady Cougars Receive Player of the Week Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Cheryl Balogh and Kristen Votapek, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team, were recently honored for their performances during the week of October 21-27. Balogh, a junior defender from Lima, Ohio, was selected as the American Mideast Conference Defender of the Week and the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week after guiding MVNU to a 2-0 record for the week. In a 3-0 win over Ohio Dominican University, the former All-Ohioan at Elida High School anchored the defense as the Lady Cougars posted the team’s fifth shutout of the season. In the team’s 2-1 victory at Tiffin University, Balogh made one defensive save to preserve the victory over the conference-leading Lady Dragons. On the season, Balogh has started all 17 of the team’s matches and is second on the team in minutes played (1460). She has also recorded one goal and two assists. Votapek, a freshman forward from Amelia, Ohio, was chosen as the AMC Offensive Player of the week after scoring three of MVNU’s five goals for the week. In the win over Ohio Dominican, the former All-Ohioan at Amelia High School scored two goals. She closed out the week by scoring the game-winning goal against Tiffin in the 86th minute. For the season, Votapek leads the Lady Cougars with 18 goals as she has scored in 13 of the team’s 17 matches. She has also registered seven assists, which ranks second on the team. MVNU is currently 11-5-1 overall and in third place in the American Mideast Conference South Division with a 4-1-1 conference mark. The Lady Cougars will close out the regular season on Saturday with a conference match against Walsh University at 3:00 p.m.
