MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Matt Packard and Trevor Knowles, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team, were recently honored for their performances during the week of October 21-27. Packard, a junior midfielder from Avon Lake, Ohio, was selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week after scoring four goals and adding an assist during the Cougars' 2-0 week. The former All-Ohioan at Avon Lake High School scored both goals in MVNU's 2-0 victory at Urbana University. Then, he closed out the week with two goals and an assist in the team's 6-1 win over Trinity International (Ill.) University. For the season, Packard ranks second on the team in goals (8), assists (4), and total points (20). He has scored in each of the Cougars' last three matches as MVNU has gone on a three-match winning streak. Knowles, a senior goalkeeper from Gahanna, Ohio, was named the American Mideast Conference Defender of the Week as he allowed just one goal in two matches for the week. The former standout at Westerville North High School stopped seven saves in posting the team's sixth shutout of the year in the 2-0 win at Urbana. Then, he closed out the week by posting three saves as the Cougars downed Trinity International 6-1. For the season, Knowles is among the AMC leaders with a 1.08 goals against average as he has allowed just 18 goals in 17 matches with 81 saves. MVNU has outscored its opponents 35-19 on the season. The Cougars, who are 10-7-0 overall, will return to action on Friday when the team will host Kentucky Christian College in a non-conference match that is slated to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
