NewsLady Cougars Named to Verizon Academic All-District Teamwritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Jenni Davis and Jackie Shively, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch softball team, were recently selected to the Verizon Academic All-District IV teams.
Davis, a senior outfielder from Cardington, Ohio, was named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV Second Team. The former Cardington-Lincoln High School star posted a .311 batting average with one double, one triple, eight RBI, and 27 runs scored this season. An Integrated Language Arts major, Davis posted a 3.890 grade point average in the classroom. Shively, a sophomore outfielder from Englewood, Ohio, was named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV Third Team. The former Northmont High School standout batted .269 this year with 17 RBI and 20 runs scored. She was also second on the team with eight stolen bases. A Middle Childhood Education major, Shively has posted a 3.909 grade point average in the classroom. The Verizon Academic All-District IV teams consist of student-athletes from NCAA II, III, and NAIA schools in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. An athlete must be at least a sophomore with a grade point average of at least 3.200 to be nominated. MVNU closed out the 2003 season with a 29-20 overall record - tying the mark for the third-most wins in school history. The Lady Cougars also advanced to the NAIA Region IX Tournament for the first time ever.
