NewsMVNU's Morey Named NCCAA Player of the Week

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Derek Morey, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, was recently selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week for his efforts during the week of April 28-May 4.
Morey, a sophomore right-hander from Horseheads, New York, pitched the Cougars to a pair of victories over Walsh University and Point Park (Pa.) College during the week with a 0.75 earned run average. In a 3-1 win over Walsh, the former Horseheads High School standout allowed just six hits, one walk, and one earned run as he worked all seven innings to clinch a berth in the NAIA Region IX Tournament for MVNU.
Morey closed out the week by allowing just three hits, three walks, and one run over five innings with two strikeouts in an 11-1 victory over Point Park as the Cougars clinched the American Mideast Conference North Division title and the top seed at the NAIA Region IX Tournament.
Morey has posted a 5-2 record on the season with a 4.25 ERA. He has won four straight starts including a 7-3 complete game victory over Malone College in the second round of the NAIA Region IX Tournament.
MVNU is currently 27-17 overall and will play Ohio Dominican University in the NAIA Region IX Tournament championship game on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. The Cougars need just one win to advance to the East Coast Super Regional against Wilmington (Del.) College later this week.
