NewsCougars Sweep Final AMC Weekly Baseball Honorswritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Justin Clarey and Adam Rowe, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, were recently selected as the American Mideast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for their performances during the week of May 5-11.
Clarey, a junior catcher from Columbus, Ohio, batted .545 for the week as the Cougars won all three of their games at the NAIA Region IX Tournament. The former All-Ohioan at Hilliard Darby High School was 6-for-11 with two doubles, three RBI, and a .727 slugging percentage. In MVNU's opening game 2-0 win over Tiffin University, Clarey was 1-for-3. He followed that by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in a 7-3 victory over Malone College. Then, he closed out the week with a 3-for-4 showing with one double and one RBI in an 8-7 extra-inning win over Point Park (Pa.) College. Clarey closed out the season batting .296 with 10 doubles, one triple, a team-high eight home runs, 10 runs scored, and 34 RBI. Rowe, a junior left-handed pitcher from Wooster, Ohio, tossed a four-hit shutout against Tiffin in the Cougars' opening game of the tournament. The former Wooster High School star worked all nine innings and allowed just four walks with a season-high 11 strikeouts in the 2-0 win. Rowe finished the season with a 5-4 record and a 4.35 ERA on the mound. In 72 1/3 innings of work, he struck out a team-high 80 batters and issued just 34 walks. Opponents hit just .257 against him. MVNU finished the season with a 27-19 overall record. The Cougars were also the NAIA Region IX Tournament runner-up for the fourth straight year.
