NewsLady Cougars Land Soccer Recruit from Wadsworthwritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer
team has landed its first recruit for the 2003 season with the
addition of Katie Farver.
Farver, a forward from Wadsworth, Ohio, recorded nine goals and four assists in 18 matches as a senior at Wadsworth Senior High School. For her efforts, she was selected to the Suburban League Second Team and the Medina County Honorable Mention Team in 2002. She was also named to the Greater Akron All-Star Team. "I am very excited to have Katie commit to playing for us next year," said MVNU head coach Jonathan Meade. "She comes from a good soccer background and has the right foundation to excel at the college level. She is versatile and could potentially be used in the back, midfield, or up front. She is the type of player who will challenge immediately for playing time. She is definitely going to push us to be a better team." "I believe we are not only getting a very good player in Katie, but also a genuine and authentic person," Meade added. "After you spend fifteen minutes with her, you come away saying that she is one of the nicest people you know. She is a quality student and most importantly cares about her faith in Christ. It was important to me and the team to know that she wanted to be in an atmosphere that was going to help her grow in her faith, and I am glad that she believes that MVNU is the best place for her." In addition to her accomplishments on the soccer field, Farver has been active on student council and as a HUDDLE leader. She has also volunteered with Key Club for three years and has been a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes for four years. In addition, she has played basketball at Wadsworth High School for three years and run track for four years. "Mount Vernon Nazarene provides many opportunities for me educationally, spiritually, and athletically," said Farver of her college choice. "Coach Meade has made me feel very welcome, and I am excited to be a part of such a great group of players who have already accomplished a lot. I know that the university fits all my needs and everyone is so friendly and welcoming." "I am looking into the education field, and MVNU has an excellent program," added Farver. "With the help of the professors and their teachings, I have no doubt that my future will be successful. The most important thing that I liked about MVNU is how important Christianity is to everyone. Not only will chapel be great, but the small groups in the dorms and the many groups to get involved in will be something beneficial. MVNU will help me become a great person and will prepare me for my future." The Lady Cougars finished the 2002 season with a 14-8-1 overall record as they tied the school record for most wins in a season. MVNU also finished third in the highly-competitive American Mideast Conference South Division and fourth at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament.
