NewsSecond Worthington Christian Player Commits to MVNUwritten by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director MOUNT
VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's
basketball team has signed another player to join the team in
2003-2004 with the addition of Katy Barry.
Barry, a 5-foot-6 guard from Dublin, Ohio, has decided to further her education and continue her basketball career at MVNU. She will join current Worthington Christian High School teammate Allison Linak, who has also committed to play both basketball and soccer for the Lady Cougars starting next season. After playing her first two high school seasons at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Barry moved to Worthington Christian for her final two seasons. As a junior, she helped the team to conference, sectional, and district championships and a regional runner-up finish. "I am glad to have Katy joining our program next year," said MVNU head coach Steve Gregory. "She is a combo guard who comes from a very good basketball program at Worthington Christian. She will compete at the point and shooting guard positions. She is a strong three-point shooter who handles the ball well." "Katy has also done very well in the classroom," Gregory added. "She will represent MVNU well with respect to athletics, academics, and spiritual maturity." In addition to playing basketball, Barry is a three-year letter winner in varsity softball. She has also been on the Merit Roll (3.0 or higher grade point average) for three years. "There are several reasons why I chose MVNU," said Barry of her college choice. "It's a Christian university with a friendly atmosphere and a small, nice campus. I will have the opportunity to continue playing basketball, and MVNU will give me a chance to succeed spiritually and academically." MVNU is currently off to a 4-5 start this season with a roster that consists of eight freshmen and sophomores and only five juniors and seniors. The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday when the team will travel to the University of Rio Grande for a 6:00 p.m. conference contest.
